The project site is a 4 square kilometre area of land adjacent to the Bohai sea in the Ganjingzi district near the port city of Dalian in northern China. This major urban design project was a joint venture with Dalian Survey and Design, a well respected design practice in Dalian.

DMA concentrated on the interface with the waterfront which involved permissible land reclamation up to 400 metres out into the Bohai sea which freezes over in winter. The creation of a new community with beach village, international hotel, town centre, a range of residential options, recreational parkland, esplanade, technology park, community infrastructure, bus station and schools was proposed.

A major challenge was to ensure that the northern sea outlook was made available whilst capturing southern sunlight and maintaining protection from the freezing north western winds from Mongolia in the winter.

A range of designs for various types of buildings was proposed that showed how to achieve this goal utilizing passive solar design techniques. Outdoor spaces were treated in a similar manner.

Seafront reclamation was reduced to minimize environmental damage and existing coastal features such as hills and headlands were kept in their natural state to preserve them for visual and recreational purposes. A sweeping esplanade was established along the beachfront.
