Snow Mountain Resort Yunnan - China
A new resort complex replacing an obsolete tourist hotel on the Jade Dragon river below the world famous Snow Mountain near Lijiang in south western China.
The site is clearly visible from atop Snow Mountain and we decided that the development should therefore be as unobtrusive as possible.
Most of the buildings are underground structures opening onto stone terraces stepping down to the river bank with glazed elements piercing the surface only. The built forms are reminiscent of the terraced agricultural land forms that have existed for thousands of years in this part of the world.
